Hepatitis anyone?

(A gorgeous picture, i know. Yikes.)
Today we went to out local travel clinic for our first "consultation" for our vaccations/immunizations. We were there for almost 2 hours! They told us all about every option we had, every illness we COULD contract, including Rabies that we may get from a bat being in our hotel room at night that might bite us in our sleep although we might not feel it. No really, apparently that has happened ONCE....so, they like to suggest it. We watched a video of all the things we can or can't do while in Ethiopia and we even got a book with out names printed on the front! We went ahead and started our long list of vaccinations today and both got our Hepatitis A and B shots. It wasn't bad at all but since these suckers are going to be about $600+ for each of us we decided to spread them out a bit. Our doc wants us to do things like Flu shots too, but at the price they are quoting...I don't think I mind taking the chance on barfing for a day or 2. Anyway, it was an overall good experience and they are defanitly looking out for us- they even want us to send them a postcard while we are there! I guess if i am giving them $1200 whats another .25cents for a postcard? Us and the travel clinic- were BFF's.

What??? Bats? I don't like Bats!! Thanks again for your comments and the love!!! :) I just can't stop looking at their pictures. So where do you stand with things- fingerprints and then approval- is that it? Well my blog buddy- I'm thinking of you and hoping things get moving and little Malak finds you soon!

Hope the booboo feels better soon. Its not fun to get the shots, but I think the cost hurt me more! We didn't get rabies because the CDC only suggest it if you are going to be out in the bush...which I don't think we will be doing with an 8 year old and a baby anyway. Hope the rest of the shots go smoothly. The only one that really hurt us at all was the yellow fever...it makes your arm sore for a bit. We are hoping that the whole Steven Curtis Chapman things does yield some money in the end...hopefully maybe with a grant:)Amy

what? 600 bucks for a shot! Why won't your health insurance cover any of that?

ohhh, I forgot about all of those shots! Guess we'll have to get started on ours pretty soon! :) Just means we're getting closer to getting our baby!

$600 a shot! I think I would take my chances with the bat! Just kidding. Well, I guess when you come home with a baby and no malaria, it will all be worth it! I can't believe it took you 2 hours! I was thinking you were going to call us last night to do something, and now I understand why you didn't!

It won't be $600 per shot- it will be $600 total for each of us to get all the shots that we need. And believe me, we opted out of the rabies dose- I will take my chances with the freaky sneaky hotel bats.

Ouch in the wallet and the arm!!! We started ours too, I already had some of them but poor Cortney had to get 5 in one day!!! I told him that Ian may have to get a bunch too when he gets here and he stopped complaining about his arms!! We didn't get the rabies one either...the bat thing is pretty crazy!! Could you really be bitten by a bat and not know it??? Crazy stuff, maybe the three of us will sleep under a net in the hotel just to be safe!!!

I've heard about those stealth bites from rabid bats more than once--and the ones I heard about happened in the US, so I'm all paranoid and I want to get a rabies vaccine even though I'm not going anywhere. I'm a dork.

Thanks for the heads up on the cost of shots. We had our appt. set for this Thurs. with Passport Health and have since canceled and made other cheaper arrangements. I had know idea it would cost this much. Again thank you!

My husband is in seminary, pursuing an MDiv degree and they have a health center and offer shots for international travel due to the volumn of mission trips the students take. So, I called them and ask if they would do it for an adoption and they said "Yes." We go tomorrow...Ouch!
